Y Week

I'm finally back! It took us several weeks to do our letter Y activities, but we have finally finished all of our letters.

Trip enjoyed a yellow lunch.

He loves yogurt, so he got to choose some special ones on a couple of different occasions when we were at the store. I usually only buy big containers of the plain stuff and add jam, so he had lots of fun choosing something new and exciting. He also helped me make a delicious lemon yogurt cake.

He thought this yo-yo lunch was pretty cool, especially since it included olives and pickles, two of his favorites.

The only y-related art project that we did was to make designs with yarn soaked in glue.

S Week

With all our our craziness lately, S week got stretched out over a couple of weeks, with activities here and there whenever we had a chance to fit them in.

Since so many fun words start with S, Trip has enjoyed several special lunches, including a sandcastle,

six snails,

and a spaceship among the stars.

We did a simple spring stained glass craft.

Sports were of course a big part of S week. We played many different ones, both inside and outside. Trip also got a envelope from Noni filled with sports pictures that she had cut out of the newspaper. That was a big hit!

Thanks to Bapa and Granny, Trip now has a superhero cape and mask. He had lots of fun playing superhero, having me fly him around the house, and coming "to the rescue."

Trip also enjoyed playing a game he invented the last time Noni was here, which is coloring numbers in Mommy's sudoku book. He especially likes this game when one of us pretends to be upset that he colored the numbers.

E Week

We had lots of fun activities to do during E week, most of them centering around eggs. This is extra fun since Easter is coming up, but these activities could be done at any time of year. Check back all week for more details about these projects.

We ate eggs almost each day. We had them scrambled, in a German pancake/Dutch baby, in egg salad, and as these cute deviled egg chicks.

Trip had fun with this letter E matching game/puzzle.

We hatched a dinosaur egg from the dollar store, which was a lot of fun.

I made Trip some treasure eggs, which were a big hit.

Finally, Trip enjoyed covering an E with elk stickers.

U Week

Last week was an unusually rainy one, which was perfect for the letter U and umbrellas. Click on the links to see the full post about each of these activities.

Trip enjoyed his umbrella snack.

We did a fun umbrella craft with muffin papers.

Trip had lots of fun coloring under the table while wearing his Broncos uniform.

Z Week

Z was another tough letter on the inspiration front, but we had a good time with it nonetheless. Follow the links to see more about each activity.

Trip has been enjoying his zoo sensory tub.

It didn't take long for us to decimate this zebra-striped banana cake.

Trip loved his simple Z lunch.

Q Week

It's been a busy few weeks, so we've been taking it easy with our letters. We've had a little fun with the letter Q where we can fit it in. Not much of it is blog-worthy, but it's fun to incorporate our letter into our normal activities.

Trip enjoyed this queen lunch.

He liked his lunch of quesadilla quarters and spontaneously started putting a grape in the middle of each one.

We had lots of fun using dish soap on a q-tip to make art in milk.

One afternoon after I picked Trip up from his babysitter's house, we made a special trip to a local restaurant called Burger Queen for some ice cream. Trip did not complain about this extra stop on the way home!

With all of our running around, we have practiced being quick but have also had some nice times to snuggle and be quiet. We have even enjoyed a couple of walks around our little town to see the hundreds of quails that wander our streets. They are fascinating creatures to watch.

X Week

Last week, Trip and I had some simple fun with the letter X. Letters like X that appear in so few words are great for weeks like we're having right now. I've had quite a few days of work, Daddy has been out of town, and we've had several other commitments too.

Many of these are activities that could be adapted to any letter and are especially great for less-used letters. I can come up with tons of activities for P, S, and T, but X, Y, and Z are a little more difficult so having some generic activities is helpful. Click on the links to see more about each project.

Trip loved excavating Xs out of cloud dough.

He had a blast watching Xs melt out of ice cubes in the bath tub.

We had an easy snack of Xs.

And finally, we did a little X art project with stickers and watercolors.

N Week

Our N week included some fun food and several sensory activities.

We started off the week with a nest of numbers.

Trip loved his nest lunch

and had lots of fun making a Nutella treat.

He thought making edible necklaces was pretty great too.

We got out our new numbers sensory tub several times throughout the week.

Check back next week to find out about our letter X activities!

V Week

Our V week was full of Valentine, vacuuming, and volcano fun. Click on the links for the full post with more details about each of these activities!

Trip had a fun and simple Valentine's lunch with some delicious homemade fruit gummies.

We made valentines for some family members.

I made a Valentine's Day banner for our kitchen/dining room.

Trip loved vacuuming up tiny letters.

And finally, Trip discovered that volcanoes are super fun through a science experiment

and a snack afterwards.

I found pictures of vegetables in magazines and Trip helped me glue them onto the V. He was excited to be in charge of the glue stick but wanted me to put most of the veggies on the paper.

Check back next week to see our N week fun!

J Week- Js in Jell-O

Last summer, I came upon a few boxes of Jell-O that were way past their expiration dates. I didn't want to eat them, but didn't want to throw them out either. After a little research online, I found a recipe for Jell-O playdough, which I've made a few times. J week presented another good opportunity to use up another box.

My friend Laura has been making a weekly activity plan for her 18 month old son and has come up with lots of great things to do with him. She shared the link to "snakes in jelly" from The Imagination Tree, which looked like lots of fun. I had a box of outdated peach Jell-O (the eight-serving size), so I mixed up half of it and poured it in an old disposable angel food cake pan. I then added some foam Js and a plastic J magnet. Once that half solidified in the fridge, I made the rest of the box and poured it on top with a couple of J cookie cutters and some more foam letters. I refrigerated the whole thing overnight, although a few hours would have been enough. I followed the original recipe, which makes fairly soft gelatin. That consistency was just fine for playing and squished nicely. If you want it to hold its shape better, add some plain gelatin powder or make the Jigglers recipe on the box.

When Trip was ready to play, I placed the mold in a sink of warm water for a few minutes and then inverted it onto a cookie sheet. He was thrilled to dig in!

He got right to work getting out the Js, both with his hands and with the plastic utensils I gave him.

Once most of the letters were out, he had fun squishing the Jell-O!

This was a very entertaining activity that was just messy enough to be super fun, but without being too much to do inside. We will definitely have to do this again sometime. It could be a good activity for weeks when we don't have much to do with our chosen letter. I have a feeling I'll be making some gelatin with X, Y, or Z in it!
