Building Words

I put stickers on some blocks for an easy letter matching and word building activity.

Trip had to just explore the blocks first and enjoyed building a tower.

Then, we got down to the actual letter matching and made a tower of words.

He wasn't too thrilled to show off his work, though. :)

Later that day, he got his backpack and went to "school" at his desk where he had a little more fun with the letter blocks, this time coloring the stickers.

Letter Matching with Stickers

After matching letters in the bathtub a couple of weeks ago, I decided to get out some letter stickers and do some more matching. I wrote each of the letters of Trip's name on a half-sheet of cardstock to give him a place to stick the stickers.

He really enjoyed taking the backing off of the foam letter stickers, which I was not expecting. He didn't want any help from me and patiently worked to get the back off of each letter.

I had imagined the stickers being around the letters, but Trip wanted them right on each letter. He didn't get much more than this done before he was distracted and wanted to do something else.

We finished this project the next day and it's now hanging on the door to his room.

Alphabet Bath

Our alphabet bath was simple but fun after a busy day. I filled the tub with foam letters and a few drops of food coloring.

I also wrote the boys' names and the alphabet on the wall with bath crayons.

It didn't take long for the silliness to start.

Then, some serious work happened too when they started matching the foam letters to the letters on the wall.

More Alphabet Activities

We've done a couple more general alphabet activities in recent weeks.

Trip had a good time with the alphabet in Jell-O, much like he did with J's in Jell-O earlier this year. I made one large box of Jell-O in a plastic storage container, then added a little more than half of the alphabet. I used a mix of cookie cutter, magnetic, and foam letters. Once that set up in the fridge, I made another box of gelatin, poured it over the first batch, and added the rest of the letters. After the whole thing solidified, I turned it out onto a cookie sheet, and let Trip have at it.

He had a great time digging out those letters and was very serious about his work.

Another alphabet activity that Trip loved was alphabet soup. I made a simple soup of onions, garlic, carrots, celery, tomatoes, chicken stock, and some spices. Once the veggies were tender, I added a bag of tiny alphabet noodles (the kind you find in the Mexican food aisle). The noodles couldn't cook fast enough for Trip and his friends who were eagerly anticipating a fun lunch.

Two helpings later, this was all that was left in Trip's bowl. Everyone enjoyed eating the alphabet and happily ate their veggies.

The Alphabet for Lunch

This lunch was slightly challenging to create, but it was lots of fun to put together. I started it on a serving platter, but had to move it to a cookie sheet in order to fit the whole alphabet. I tried to stick to food that I knew Trip would like, including carrots, celery, bread, pickles, pepperoni, fruit leather, pistachios, mini chocolate chips, and mini marshmallows. He was quite happy with his special lunch, and ate just about all of it, which makes it all worth it for me.
